Teenager Develops App That Screens TV, Movie Spoilers From Twitter

May 9, 2013
A 17-year-old girl from Nashua, New Hampshire created the software Twivo on April 2013 to keep Twitter fans protected from spoilers against their favorite TV shows. Feeds settings can be adjusted to prevent sharing information about TV shows that they mention as well as related characters and facts. Lamere joined the Boston Hackathon and was the only female in the group. Also, she was the only entry who worked alone. She took home the grand prize. According to Lamere, she felt a little weird knowing that she was the only girl among all contestants. She mentioned seeing other women at the event, such as judges and an organizer. Lamere is a high school senior who likes to make robots and join hackathon competitions. She won the subcategory then moved on to win ?best use of sync-to-broadcast? and, finally, ?best in show?. Jennie Lamere thought of creating Twivo just the night before the contest. She worked 10 hours and used 150 lines of code to finish the project. The new software serves as an extension to Google Chrome internet browser. To start banning TV shows and characters from being shown in feeds, users just need to type in the keywords they wish to block as well as indicate how long they like to keep these information blocked. The tweets can also reappear should the user unblock these. Currently, Lamere is still improving Twivo with tech company Furious Minds showing intent to help her with the final output. The spokesman for the Boston Hackathon, Proulx, shared how she was impressed with Lamere?s performance, considering the fact that most participants were male and worked in groups. As a reward for getting the top spot, Lamere got an Apple TV and iPad minis. Lamere?s successful showing will hopefully encourage more women to join hackathons and be part of the tech community.
