Social Media Uses Hashtag Against Disability Discrimination

September 18, 2013
The hashtag #heardwhilstdisabled recently trended on Twitter -- and rightly so, as it is on a mission: that is, to combat discrimination against persons with disabilities in any occasion. The hashtag was initiated early this year and has recently been resurrected shed light on this issue. It actually takes on a lighter approach, discussing social issues surrounding disability with some degree of humor with the objective of making people aware of the consequences of thoughtless comments. Social media can be very effective in spreading information about societal problems as well as finding resolutions that will ultimately improve the way deal with others within the same community. Twitter users were shocked and sad when they realized how cruel and apathetic people can be when they talk about individuals with disabilities. The hashtag was both a venue to boost awareness and to vent. Here are some of the more interesting tweets since the hashtag started. disability1 Individuals also shared a variety of conditions that many suffer from but other people seem to care less about, like fibromyalgia, psychological problems and neurotic conditions. The hashtag aims to let more people become aware of the existence of disability prejudice and the ongoing discrimination towards victims. Disabled people also shared their own experiences and how they prefer to be treated by others. Social media will hopefully bridge the gap between the healthy and incapacitated, increasing sensitivity and encouraging support to improve the lives of affected individuals and families. The hashtag has also become a venue for the disabled to vent out their frustrations and remain emotionally stable despite their daily challenges. The social media community did not disappoint in showing support, with the hashtag reaching a total of 5 million impressions so far.
