Vine Experiences Porn Problems Following Twitter Acquisition

January 29, 2013
vineTwitter may have lofty expectations for its new acquisition, Vine, but things immediately turned bad when the app featured a short explicit video as one of its ?editor?s pick? on January 28, 2013. The video was tagged ?nsfwvine? and ?porn? so users can freely view the material. Because of the human error, as Twitter claimed it to be, Vine immediately transformed into a hub for adult material. Obviously, it wasn?t the intent of the social micro-blogging giant since the app was designed for social media enthusiasts to share videos lasting only six seconds. Vine was only launched a week before the problem occurred. Because of the nature and methods that information is passed via social media, it is expected for the sensitive material to spread quickly all over the site. One of the main problems that Twitter and Vine are facing is that the explicit content is easily viewable even to very young audiences, considering the fact that children are not prohibited from viewing any material on the app. Twitter was quick to apologize for the mistake. It pointed out that human error was the main cause of the incident and that the video was removed immediately. The company is working hard to clean up the app as soon as possible. Twitter also encouraged users to report videos that are deemed inappropriate or sensitive. Users are also encouraged to read the Vine Rules to know which types of material are prohibited. There were rising conflicts due to the fact that Twitter is generally known as an anti-censor website. However, when the content posted is contrary to law and government policy, it is imperative that the company do everything possible to stop the spread of explicit material on Vine or it may be held liable. Possession and the creation of copies of child pornography are punishable offenses. Twitter and Vine users working together will hopefully fix the problem at the soonest time.
