A lawyer the client does not pay for, either because (1) that lawyer is pro bono, or (2) because some third party is paying the lawyer, or (3) because the lawyer is willing to forego payment due to some other benefit the lawyer, law firm or some other entity is getting that the lawyer favors. An example of #3 is a lawyer who owns some other company that is getting paid through the deal (such as a real estate brokerage) and so is willing to waive the legal fees.

Pro bono attorney or legal services corporation, which may be funded by tax dollars, donations, or some combination.
