The attitudes, ambitions and world view of young people aged 16 to 21 is collectively known as the Beta Generation. Defined by youth volunteering charity vInspired from a large-scale survey data from this age group, neuroscientific research findings and case-studies of young people involved in vInspired projects. Beta ? a term used widely in the testing of technology ? is used to coin the attitude of this generation ? one of trying new things and not being scared to fail. This generation of young people, born between 1991 and 1996, have spent their formative years in a time of economic uncertainty, with the financial crisis beginning in 2008. Despite growing up in a time of austerity and negative press, young people?s attitude to life remains positive. vInspired's report shows that young people are aware of their need to control their own destinies ? not relying on other people to give them opportunities to shine. When faced with problems they find their own solutions and rather than letting failure get to them, they learn from mistakes they make. A large minority of young people can see opportunities arising from the recession and are inspired to run their own businesses or pursue portfolio careers. They are positive in their descriptions of themselves and learn for pleasure as well as to get ahead of the game. In investigating these aspects of the Beta Generation, vInspired looked firstly at the attitudes of young people and the ways in which they describe themselves before turning to their attitudes to risk, failure and making mistakes. Secondly, their attitude to making money ? looking at ways they currently earn, their desires in future careers and the structure they would like future careers to take. And finally at young people?s attitudes to learning, investigating what they learn, how they do it and why. All of these issues are explored in the context of a generation who have grown up with technology at their fingertips. It is often the use of this technology that sets the Beta Generation out from others.
