The Short Story is an invented prose narrative that is shorter than a novel, usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect. It is considered both an apprenticeship form preceding longer-works as well as a crafted form in its own right. While it has no set length, the conventional literary short story is between 2,000 and 7,500 words and often concentrates on the creation of mood rather than plot. Anton Chekhov, Raymond Carver and Alice Munro are some of the more celebrated masters of the form.
