Tokelau coins have increased in popularity since 2012 when a new range of gold, silver and base metal coins were released for collectors. The coins, which carry the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, are issued on a variety of themes, including a bullion series featuring Tokelau Fish of which they have many varieties. Tokelau's entire economic exclusive zone is a designated shark sanctuary where they protect over 30 species of shark. Consisting of three coral atolls, Atafu, Nokunonu and Fakaofo, Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand. The atolls lie approximately mid-way between Hawaii and New Zealand and about 500km north of Samoa. Tokelau is one of the only countries in the world to be totally solar powered. The national symbol of Tokelau is the Taluma, a uniquely Tokelauan wooden tackle box used by fishermen. The Taluma bears a white cross in the centre, symbolising Christianity, which is further emphasised with the inscription 'Tokelau no the Atua', meaning 'Tokelau for God'.
