#truemigrainepose was created in opposition to the fashion industry's newest Instagram pose - "#migrainepose," in which a model lightly presses their hand to the temple which frames the face, gives an instant facelift and shows off you manicure - according to make-up article Nam Vo who coined the term. In June & July 2018, nine magazines/ publications shared articles in favor of using the #migrainepose, which was changed to #headachepose after they received a barrage of tweets discussing how insensitivity of the articles. However, changing it to #headachepose doesn't make it any better since there are over 300 medically recognized classifications of headache disorders, with migraine being just one. Those with migraine and headache diseases fought back showing what it's really like to have an attack, calling it #truemigrainepose. As of 725/18, nine outlets have reported on the trend including the New York Post, USA Today, Daily Mail UK, MamaMia (Austraia), Cosmo Australia and Vogue Italy. CHAMP (Coalition For Headaache And Migraine Patients) have sent formal letters to these publications, asking that they commit to a medically accurate article or awareness campaign, talk to real patients and show their pictures to stop perpetuating the stigma that we face. Ten media outlets have reported on the backlash and also highlighted a Change.org petition started by Om that has 3,000 signatures. By using #truemigrainepose, individuals are boldly showing the physical effects of a variety of headache disease that are rarely shared with the public. Continuing #truemigrainepose will continue to bring awareness of the disabling effects of our diseases.
