Venezuelan President Announces Cabinet On Twitter

October 15, 2012
It appears that making political announcements is now a Twitter thing, with presidents joining the fray. President Hugo Chavez (@chavezcandanga) of Venezuela was diagnosed with cancer but has been re-elected on October 14, 2012 for another term which would last six years. While recuperating, President Chavez appointed Nicolas Maduro (@Nicolas_Maduro), his trusted adviser, to become vice-president. The announcement of the second Venezuelan leader was made at the National Electoral Commission in one occasion when Chavez officially garnered the highest number of votes. Over the weekend, the re-electionist then proceeded to announcing his cabinet choices via his Twitter account. Nicolas Maduro will be holding the reins until the next elections. Should President Chavez?s health deteriorate and render him incapable of holding office, Maduro will continue the unexpired term. In Venezuela, the President has a term that lasts six years. However, if he fails to remain in office in the initial four years of the term, the Vice-President will take over until the new elections will be done in a span of one month. If the President is unable to remain in office during the last two years, the Vice-President will continue the remaining period. Hugo Chavez, however, after undergoing radiotherapy and surgery for his condition in 2011, recently announced that he is totally cured. When he acquired the highest number of votes for the recent election, Chavez is bound to serve for a fourth term. He has been governing as President of Venezuela since 1999. More than half of the votes were garnered by President Chavez, while the rest went to Henrique Capriles (@henriquecapriles) of the opposition. Vice-President Elias Janua is prepared to run for governor of Miranda in December against Capriles. General Nestor Reverol was also appointed as the new interior minister. Even though Chavez claims to be completely recovered from the condition, doctors continue to be wary just in case things don?t turn out the way they expect. Here are the appointments Chavez announced on Twitter. (Note: The tweets were in Spanish and were translated for the purpose of this article.) Hugo Chavez has 3,634,591 followers to date.
