Social media has captured the attention of billions of people from different parts of the world, so much so that for many it has become part of the normal routine.
There are a number of tools that allow online users to monitor different areas of their online browsing.
The editors of the Socially Aware Blog recently conducted a study which shows the total number of hours online users spend on various social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and others.
How much time are you spending on social media?
Overall, Facebook is the most frequently used social media platform with visitors spending an average of 6.75 hours each month browsing through its pages.
Tumbler and Pinterest users spend about 1.5 hours on the media per month, while Twitter, Instagram and Google Plus visitors spend 21, 17 and 3 minutes respectively.
Americans were also observed in terms of their online activities from 2006 to 2011.
Social networking increased from 2.7 hours to 6.9 hours over the given period, while watching TV on the Internet increased from 6.3 hours to 23.1 hours.
As for phone, email and mail, people used to spend 5.7 hours in 2006 but the numbers have dropped to 4.8 hours.
Watching TV offline experienced the biggest drop from 71.1 hours to 59.4.
When it comes to socializing in person, the time decreased from 22.8 hours to 21. Taking care of household members also decreased from 15.9 to 15.3 hours.
People who watch online videos were also monitored. Netflix users spend 10 hours per month. Youtube users spend 3 hours and Hulu and Tudou users spend 2.5 hours per month.
Social media has also shown to be one of the most reliable forms of advertising. The top 100 advertisers have a Facebook page for their brand. When it comes to online activities, social media users spend 18 percent of their time on such websites.
