#Biden Redeems The Democrats On #VPDebate

October 12, 2012
America geared up for a highly heated #vpdebate on October 11, as Democratic Party vice presidential candidate Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) was expected to "come flying" at Republican Party vice presidential Paul Ryan (@PaulRyanVP). In part two of three debates before the 2012 US national election, viewers anticipated a fiery Biden, who was supposedly there not only to further his own electoral goals but also to pick his team back up after incumbent president Barack Obama (@BarackObama) performed weakly during part one of the debates against Republican Mitt Romney (@MittRomney) a week back. Obama's failure to pick himself up gracefully in the debate with Romney had cost the Democratic team points in favor of the conservatives. To say that expectations are high on part two was certainly an understatement -- and discussions on Twitter attested to it.

The vice presidential debate was aired live on 9:00pm to 10:30pm EST of October 11 from the Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Moderating was ABC News chief foreign correspondent Martha Raddatz (@MarthaRaddatz). Here's the activity on #vpdebate while it was happening, garnering 510,688,110 impressions on Twitter at its peak. Overall, Biden appeared to have done Obama a lot of good standing up for the Democratic party's policies and presenting them nicely. At one point in the debate, Ryan told his opponent: "I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground, but I think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other." With that, Biden replied: "Well, don't take all the four minutes then." In the end, debate observers called it a draw. At this point, it is interesting to know that topics were discussed on Twitter alongside the main #vpdebate hashtag, to gain a better perspective of what transpired. Here's a chart of the top related hashtags, with #bidenwinning, #ryanwinning and #biden in the top three.
