Defend in place is a term use to describe the strategy for ensuring the occupants of apartment buildings (usually) do not have to evacuate in the event of a fire in another apartment in the same building.
The phrase is preferred to 'stay put' which is a phrase often used to describe the same strategy, however it has been misunderstood and in a notorious case resulted in people being told to remain in their apartments when they were affected by fire and smoke.
