To “control the controllables” is to focus all personal energies on the aspects of our lives that are directly within our control. Recognizing that so many things that impact our lives are out of our control, makes it even more essential that we are strategic about the things within our control. Some examples of things that are within our control include: the way we dress, the way we communicate, the respect we show for others, our work ethic and our punctuality. All of these characteristics are directly within our control and they serve to establish an individuals brand.

If a person focuses on the things within their control as opposed to the things outside their control, they will achieve a higher level of success and personal fulfillment. The concept of to “control the controllables” is a very basic discipline that discriminates against no one and is available to everyone. Some basic examples are to improve one’s dress, focus on good communicative skills, be on time, be disciplined and so on. It is my belief that by controlling the things within our control we can improve and enhance the chances of personal success.

The concept to “Control the controllables” is one that I preach to all levels of individuals to include: family, friends, constituents, colleagues and students. It is my firm belief that by focusing and prioritizing the things that are within our control, it will give us the best chance of success. Some very basic examples of this in action are things such as dress, communicative skills, showing respect for others, work ethic and so on. Life is less complicated when focusing on things within our control.
