Most people are unaware that there was slavery in New York State until 1827 and that New York City helped finance the illegal trans-Atlantic Slavery trade through the American Civil War.I am the author of New York and Slavery (SUNY) and I am currently writing a book on the struggle by abolitionists to end slavery in the United States. A major focus of the book is on the role of Black abolitionists in New York State in the fight to end slavery in the United States, protect freedom-seekers, and secure equal rights.
