Efforts to improve student achievement in mathematics have assumed prominence in Alberta and across Canada. Complicating these efforts, polarized messages regarding what sort of math instruction would best meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and abilities have often dominated popular discussion in less-than-helpful ways. Working in two different school districts over a period of 5 years, the Math Minds initiative has identified a set of strategies that transcends current debates about student vs. teacher-centered classrooms, discovery vs. directed teaching, procedural vs. conceptual learning, and individual vs. group approaches to classroom organization. The results are strong: ● sustained improvement in performance in mathematics, (measured by the Canadian Test of Basic Skills), with a particular positive impact on conceptual understanding and problem solving. ● improvement in students’ confidence in and enjoyment of mathematics.
