Business Continuity Planning
A set of plans, procedures, equipment, documents, and other risk management tools that are designed to:
1) Reduce the potential for your business to cease operations in the event "something bad" happens.
2) Protect people and property.
3) In the event operations are interrupted, restore critical operations in a rapid and orderly manner, later followed by resuming routine operations at a future time.
"Something bad" includes anything that can happen within or to a business such as death, disability, theft, utility outage, natural disaster, reputational damage, etc.
The Information Technology term "disaster recovery" is a small piece of BCP. BCP looks broadly at all activities in a business plus key external vendors.
Developing your BCP often has the side benefit of efficiency gains.
In the event of a widespread disaster, BCP may get you back in business faster than your competitors.
