Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe people who are born with genetic, hormonal, genital or other sex characteristics that do not align with stereotypical definitions of male or female bodies. An individual may possess biological traits considered to belong to both sexes or lack some of the features often believed necessary to define someone as one or the other sex. Intersex people suffer stigma and discrimination as a result. There are many different intersex variations and many different types of intersex bodies. Intersex characteristics are simply a naturally occurring expression of human bodily diversity. Since intersex bodies do not conform to medical and societal expectations, intersex people face violations of their fundamental human rights. These violations include medically unnecessary and irreversible surgeries and other invasive procedures on intersex babies and children.
