Virtual BFFs: #InternetFriendDay

September 3, 2014
There are many ways to meet new friends. Friends can meet in a coffee shop or?in school, or nowadays, even online! There are many different ways to connect with someone online and start chatting. For example, some can even meet on Twitter if they respond to and retweet each other. Others can meet in chat rooms, and others on online gaming sites. Many friends meet because they have a shared interest, such as they are a part of the same fan group or are both really into working out and getting healthy, or something along those lines. Some have them, some don't. internetfriendday2 The people that meet online do not always meet each other in real life. They could have exchanged numbers, and now moved on to texting each other, but they still initially met online, and may never meet. However, they wanted a day to celebrate these virtual friends, which is the definition of #internetfriendday, in short. It used to be that people were terrified of meeting people online, thinking that they could be different than what they say they are, or a dangerous person in general. While this still may be true, it has become more acceptable to become friends with someone online, although there is an entire MTV show about internet friends who were lying (Catfish). While it may be fun to have an internet friend, it is always better to exercise caution. internetfriendday1 Twitter is really attempting to make #internetfriendday officially on September 2, but it seems to be that it could be any day, as some posts date back further (the post above was on August 9). This is a made up holiday that the internet is trying to make happen, and it seems to be catching on. It is popular for people to have?friends that they met online, if they have met in real life or not.
