And Now Comes Flickr With Hashtags

March 18, 2013
flickThe world of hashtags is expanding. Due to the popularity and functionality of hashtags, more social media networks are including the tool in their own platforms. The hashtag originated on Twitter and is one of the most widely used tools today because it arranges topics and issues for conversations. Online users can easily find their topics of interests, as well as stay updated with the latest trends and developments in a particular field or industry. Facebook recently shared that it will be incorporating hashtags in its arsenal of tools, although social media experts speculate that there might also be a number of changes to give it a distinct appeal from the hashtags on Twitter. Flickr, a photo-sharing social media site, was the latest to introduce the use of hashtags. Its iOS application was recently updated last March 16, 2013 which includes the new support for hashtags. The company launched the new tool by inviting online users to join in the photo challenge with the hashtag #FlickrFriday.

Flickr is owned by Yahoo! and is one of the biggest photo-sharing social media sites on the internet. The introduction of hashtag on Flickr is described by social media experts as having ?perfect timing? since there are over six billion photos on the website already. The inclusion of hashtags would make it easier for users to arrange pictures according to their different objectives and interests. Facebook is yet to officially launch hashtags on its website. Experts share that the social media giant is currently in the process of making adjustments to make it more interactive and attune to the various features and functions on Facebook. The company seems intent not to completely admit the soundness of the hashtag spawned by Twitter. Even though Facebook and Twitter are currently going through an online war, Facebook admits that they are willing to adopt useful ideas and concepts from others as necessary to improve the experience of their social media users.
