#SorryFeminists Stereotypes Cause A Stir On Twitter

October 9, 2012
Feminism took a lighter tone on the micro-blogging community recently as the hashtag #sorryfeminists trended. On rare occasions, feminists might have the inclination to feel sexy about themselves. Recently, Twitter showcased a barrage of posts from women referring to themselves and each other as sexy, without taking out the serious tone for which they have always been known. Some posts bordered on ridiculous, playing at stereotypes associated with feminism. The hashtag #sorryfeminists was created to present how it is possible to be a sexy feminist. The craze started when Deborah Needleman (@debbieneedles), T: The New York Times Style Magazine?s new editor, posted on Twitter. Women throughout the Internet were wondering what made Needleman make such as statement and what "sorry feminists" actually meant. Twitter users immediately responded to the tweet and forwarded their sentiments using the hashtag #sorryfeminists. There were many who injected humor into the whole event, while others took the statement rather seriously (and defensively). Here's the Twitter activity on #sorryfeminists at its peak. Here are some of the tweets that came up. Some Twitter users said that other netizens might have misunderstood what the term really means. Needleman might also have posted the tweet to show the views of Katie Roiphe regarding "Mockery Feminists". Majority of Twitter users who came across the hashtag found the stereotype quite hilarious. Considering how feminists are mocked on a regular basis, it is almost difficult to find out if someone is either trying to crack a joke or is proving something more material. Many expected the hashtag to die down after a few days.?In fact, if we look at the graph above, we see how quickly it slumped -- just under 24 hours. Regardless, the #sorryfeminists meme was a great way to show that feminists are just like any ordinary individual. They appreciate sex, fun, beauty and humor.
