Church of England Goes A-Tweeting With #ChristmasStartsWithChrist

December 11, 2012
As Pope Benedict XVI (@pontifex) prepares to post his first tweet on December 12, 2012, the Church of England (@c_of_e) also resorted to the social media site to increase awareness especially now that the holidays are near. Bishops came up with the hashtag #ChristmasStartsWithChrist, where they will be tweeting holy messages and live-tweeting their sermons. The hashtag is particularly made to invite other members of the respective congregations to share their own thoughts and experiences, as well as indicate their hopes and plans for the coming year. Some of the holy men who will be live-tweeting their sermons on #ChristmasStartsWithChrist include Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop of York (@johnsentamu), Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury (@lambethpalace), and Justin Welby, Archbishop Designate (@bishopofdurham). The Christmas tweet online campaign expects members from 12,000 different parishes belonging to the Church of England to live tweet and post about their own sentiments and share the real meaning of Christmas. The hashtag will officially go live on Christmas Eve and will feature a number of highlights, such as sermons from huge cathedrals and morning and midnight services. Churches from various sectors are actually invited to live tweet their services on Twitter. Let's see how it fares this early in the month. Twitter or social media allows people to get closer to their passion, in this case particularly, their faith. The Archbishops? Council Director of Communications Arun Arora said that #ChristmasStartsWithChrist is a great privilege for the parishes of the Church of England to access people in a wholly unique way other than traditional churches. Using Twitter will address millions of people all over the country and the world to celebrate the joy and essence of the birth of Christ. It is indicative that the Catholic Church is willing to innovate and adjust to changes to cater to new audiences.
